From the author of “Plaza
Suite”, California Suite”, “Barefoot in The Park” and many other
bittersweet comedies we bring you the enchanting “Brighton Beach
Memoirs” a nostalgic and poignant look at family life in Brooklyn, New
York in the late 1930’s.
Set in the middle
income area of Brighton Beach, New York, this play derives from the
playwright’s own childhood recollections, and depicts life in the Jerome
household as seen through the eyes and humour of the 15 year old son
Eugene, who both narrates and intertwines with the action as significant
events in the life of each family member unfold to create a mix of
household tension, drama and comedy.
It is a chronicle of life on
the block for a second-generation immigrant family in the hard times
just before the outbreak of the second world war.
This is a poignant
tale of strained family affiliations, the struggle to make ends meet,
and of suppressed human emotion that will strike chords of familiarity
and empathy with most observers.
It is gently humorous, enlivened by Eugene’s teenage obsessions and
youthful observations.
