DRAMA FESTIVAL

JUNE 2007

The 2007 Sussex Downs One Act Drama Festival was hosted by Rustington Players in June this year.

On the final evening of the festival there was a great feeling of community spirit. The adjudicator, David Turner, remarked on the wonderful atmosphere. Visiting companies congratulated Rustington Players on the warmth of their welcome and the standard of organisation.

Starting on Weds 13th June and ending on Saturday 16th almost 300 people attended the festival. David Turner brought his expertise and lifelong experience in both the professional and amateurDavid Turner, Adjudicator theatre as a director, theatre manager and casting director and delivered sensitive and constructive adjudications across the board.

With eight individual and diverse entries, including two original plays, awarding only five prizes was not an easy task.

The final awards were as follows:

  • Best Actor-Jason Evans, Rustington Players for The Police Inspector in Who Wouldn’t Have Dunnit?

  • Best Actress-Amanda Hislop, Storrington Dramatic Society for Lady Audley in The Day Of Reckoning

  • Best Director-Kathy Haigh, Bury Players for Gosforth’s Fete Best Production-Bury Players for Gosforth’s Fete

  • The Adjudicator’s special award went to West Chiltington Dramatic Society’s technical team, especially props, for Fallen Angels (Act 11)

Presentation

The Gala evening attracted a capacity audience and those present saw the premier of a short play, Taking Sides, by one of the members, Jan Bryant. This was followed by supper organised by Colleen and Peter Cavell and served by members of Rustington Players.

Such was the success of the entire event that numerous requests were received for this festival to become an annual event at Rustington. The only missing factor was amateur drama groups from south of the downs. Perhaps, if we do it again, we can persuade them to join us next time to celebrate that amdram is alive and kicking in Sussex.
